The idea

What is Demand and supply?

Demand and supply are the two forces that set prices in a market. Demand is the quantity of a good buyers are willing and able to purchase at each price, rising as price falls, giving a downward-sloping curve; supply is the quantity sellers offer at each price, rising with price. Where the curves cross is the equilibrium price and quantity. Changes in income, tastes, costs or technology shift a whole curve, moving the equilibrium; a price change alone moves along a curve.

Where it appears: Class 11-12 CBSE Economics, ICSE and ISC, IGCSE and A Level Economics, IB Economics, UPSC prelims, CUET.

Where learners get stuck

Why Demand and supply is hard

Learners confuse a movement along a curve (caused by price) with a shift of the curve (caused by anything else), and cannot say which curve shifts when, say, a drought hits or incomes rise.

The picture a good explanation starts with: A graph with price on the vertical axis and quantity on the horizontal, a downward demand curve and upward supply curve crossing at equilibrium, then the demand curve shifting right.

A lesson, step by step

How a lesson on Demand and supply goes

  1. 01

    Ask

Type or say "What is the difference between a shift and a movement along the demand curve?" in your own words, in any of 26 languages.

  2. 02

    Plan

The tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, starting with a graph with price on the vertical axis and quantity on the horizontal, a downward demand curve and upward supply curve crossing at equilibrium, then the demand curve shifting right.

  3. 03

    Explain

It explains Demand and supply out loud while the picture builds step by step, pitched to your level (Class 11-12 CBSE Economics and up).

  4. 04

    Interrupt

Say "wait, why?" or type a doubt: it stops, answers over the picture, and carries on. Ask for a different explanation any time.

  5. 05

    Check

A checkpoint question makes sure the idea landed, and Test Lab keeps the practice going.

  6. 06

    Your notes

Upload a PDF or a photo of your class notes or a past paper and the lesson follows your textbook's terms.

Ask it anything

Questions learners ask about Demand and supply

  • What is the difference between a shift and a movement along the demand curve?
  • Why does the demand curve slope downward?
  • How does a drought change the price of onions?

Any of these, or your own, typed or spoken. The tutor answers on the picture and adapts to how well you are following.

Where does Demand and supply come up?

Class 11-12 CBSE Economics, ICSE and ISC, IGCSE and A Level Economics, IB Economics, UPSC prelims, CUET. The lesson is pitched to your level and the exam or curriculum you follow, and you can upload your own notes or past papers so it uses your textbook's terms.
