The idea

What is IELTS speaking?

IELTS speaking is the face-to-face part of the IELTS English test, a short interview with an examiner in three parts: everyday questions about yourself, a timed solo talk on a cue card topic after brief preparation, and a discussion of broader ideas linked to that topic. You are marked on four criteria: fluency and coherence, vocabulary, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation. The test rewards natural, extended answers rather than memorised speeches.

Where it appears: IELTS Academic and General Training, university admission in the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, visa English requirements.

Where learners get stuck

Why IELTS speaking is hard

Candidates give one-line answers in part one, run out of things to say on the cue card, recite memorised phrases that sound unnatural, and fixate on accent when pronunciation marks clarity and stress.

The picture a good explanation starts with: A three-part map of the interview with each section's question type, under which the four marking criteria sit as columns with one example of what each rewards.

A lesson, step by step

How a lesson on IELTS speaking goes

  1. 01

    Ask

Type or say "How do I keep talking for the whole cue card task?" in your own words, in any of 26 languages.

  2. 02

    Plan

The tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, starting with a three-part map of the interview with each section's question type, under which the four marking criteria sit as columns with one example of what each rewards.

  3. 03

    Explain

It explains IELTS speaking out loud while the picture builds step by step, pitched to your level (IELTS Academic and General Training and up).

  4. 04

    Interrupt

Say "wait, why?" or type a doubt: it stops, answers over the picture, and carries on. Ask for a different explanation any time.

  5. 05

    Check

A checkpoint question makes sure the idea landed, and Test Lab keeps the practice going.

  6. 06

    Your notes

Upload a PDF or a photo of your class notes or a past paper and the lesson follows your textbook's terms.

Ask it anything

Questions learners ask about IELTS speaking

  • How do I keep talking for the whole cue card task?
  • What does the examiner actually mark in IELTS speaking?
  • Should I use difficult words to get a higher band?

Any of these, or your own, typed or spoken. The tutor answers on the picture and adapts to how well you are following.
