The idea

What is Indian temple architecture?

Indian temple architecture is the tradition of Hindu temple building that developed from the Gupta period onward. Its two main styles are Nagara in the north, with a curving, beehive-shaped shikhara over the sanctum, as at Khajuraho and Konark, and Dravida in the south, with a stepped pyramid vimana and towering gateway gopurams; Vesara in the Deccan blends the two. Every temple centres on the garbhagriha (sanctum), reached through a mandapa (hall), and is planned on a sacred grid.

Where it appears: CBSE Class 11 History (Fine Arts), UPSC Art and Culture, NCERT, university Indian art history, NATA and architecture courses.

Where learners get stuck

Why Indian temple architecture is hard

Students mix up shikhara and vimana, Nagara and Dravida, and the many sub-styles, and they memorise names without grasping the shared plan of sanctum, hall and tower or why the temple is laid out as a cosmic diagram.

The picture a good explanation starts with: A side-by-side elevation of a Nagara temple and a Dravida temple with shikhara, vimana, gopuram, mandapa and garbhagriha labelled, and a plan view of the vastu-purusha grid beneath.

The tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, starting with a side-by-side elevation of a Nagara temple and a Dravida temple with shikhara, vimana, gopuram, mandapa and garbhagriha labelled, and a plan view of the vastu-purusha grid beneath.
