The idea

What is Latitude, longitude and time zones?

Latitude, longitude and time zones locate places and set clocks on the globe. Latitude measures degrees north or south of the equator; longitude measures degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian at Greenwich, up to the International Date Line. Because the earth turns once a day, each fifteen degrees of longitude shifts local time by sixty minutes, giving the world its time zones; India keeps one standard time from the meridian at 82.5 degrees east.

Where it appears: Class 6 NCERT Geography (Globe), CBSE and ICSE, state boards, IGCSE Geography, UPSC prelims, SSC exams.

Where learners get stuck

Why Latitude, longitude and time zones is hard

Learners swap the two, thinking latitude lines run north to south, and fumble time calculations: which direction adds time, what happens at the Date Line, and why a country as wide as India has a single time zone.

The picture a good explanation starts with: A globe with parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude drawn and labelled, then the globe unrolled into a strip of time zones with Greenwich at the centre.

A lesson, step by step

How a lesson on Latitude, longitude and time zones goes

  1. 01

    Ask

Type or say "How do I calculate the time in another country from longitude?" in your own words, in any of 26 languages.

  2. 02

    Plan

The tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, starting with a globe with parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude drawn and labelled, then the globe unrolled into a strip of time zones with Greenwich at the centre.

  3. 03

    Explain

It explains Latitude, longitude and time zones out loud while the picture builds step by step, pitched to your level (Class 6 NCERT Geography (Globe) and up).

  4. 04

    Interrupt

Say "wait, why?" or type a doubt: it stops, answers over the picture, and carries on. Ask for a different explanation any time.

  5. 05

    Check

A checkpoint question makes sure the idea landed, and Test Lab keeps the practice going.

  6. 06

    Your notes

Upload a PDF or a photo of your class notes or a past paper and the lesson follows your textbook's terms.

Ask it anything

Questions learners ask about Latitude, longitude and time zones

  • How do I calculate the time in another country from longitude?
  • Why does India have only one time zone?
  • What happens when you cross the International Date Line?

Any of these, or your own, typed or spoken. The tutor answers on the picture and adapts to how well you are following.

Can LetMeTeach explain Latitude, longitude and time zones?

Yes. Ask in your own words and the tutor plans a lesson on Latitude, longitude and time zones: it starts with a globe with parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude drawn and labelled, then the globe unrolled into a strip of time zones with Greenwich at the centre. Then it explains each step out loud as the picture builds, stops when you say "wait, why?", and ends with a checkpoint question.

Where does Latitude, longitude and time zones come up?

Class 6 NCERT Geography (Globe), CBSE and ICSE, state boards, IGCSE Geography, UPSC prelims, SSC exams. The lesson is pitched to your level and the exam or curriculum you follow, and you can upload your own notes or past papers so it uses your textbook's terms.
