The idea
What is Piano fingering?
Piano fingering is the choice of which finger plays which key, numbered 1 for the thumb to 5 for the little finger. Good fingering lets the hand move smoothly without jumps, passing the thumb under when a scale runs beyond five keys; C major goes 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 5 in the right hand. Scales, arpeggios and chords each have standard fingerings, and in pieces the fingering is planned so that the hand is in position for what comes next.
Where it appears: ABRSM and Trinity piano Grades 1 to 8, school piano lessons, conservatoire preparation, beginner keyboard courses.
Where learners get stuck
Why Piano fingering is hard
Beginners use whatever finger is nearest, so they run out of fingers mid-phrase, and the thumb-under movement makes the hand lurch until the wrist learns to move. Left-hand fingerings mirror the right, which confuses.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A keyboard with the C major scale and the right-hand fingering 1 2 3 1 2 3 4 5 printed on each key, the thumb-under moment drawn with an arrow, and the left-hand fingering beneath.
