The idea
What is Précis writing?
Précis writing is the skill of condensing a passage to about a third of its length while keeping its main ideas, order and tone, written in your own words as a single connected paragraph. A good précis drops examples, repetition and figures of speech, keeps every essential point, uses the third person and the past tense where the original does, and carries a short title. It tests whether you have understood a text well enough to say it briefly.
Where it appears: ICSE English Class 10, CBSE Class 11 and 12, UPSC CSE English paper, SSC CGL descriptive, bank PO exams.
Where learners get stuck
Why Précis writing is hard
Learners copy whole sentences instead of rephrasing, cut important points while keeping examples, add their own opinions, or write bullet-like fragments instead of one flowing paragraph that reads naturally.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A passage on the left with key sentences highlighted and examples struck through, an arrow to the right where those highlights are rewritten into one tight paragraph with a title.
