The idea

What is Premchand's short stories?

Premchand's short stories are the Hindi and Urdu tales of Munshi Premchand (1880 to 1936), the writer who turned Indian fiction toward the lives of peasants, the poor and the lower castes. Stories such as Kafan, Idgah, Poos ki Raat, Bade Bhai Sahab and Shatranj ke Khiladi show poverty, caste, debt, child innocence and the decline of feudal society through plain language and sharp irony. His realism is sympathetic but unflinching, and his endings often refuse easy comfort.

Where it appears: CBSE and ICSE Hindi Classes 8 to 12, state board Hindi, university Hindi and Urdu literature, UPSC Hindi literature optional.

Where learners get stuck

Why Premchand's short stories is hard

Students read the stories as simple morals and miss the irony, especially in Kafan, where the ending cuts against sympathy. Rural vocabulary, caste references and the social setting of colonial India need explaining.

The picture a good explanation starts with: Four or five of the stories as small panels, each showing its central scene (Hamid buying tongs, Halku by the fire, Ghisu and Madhav at the liquor shop) with the social problem it exposes written beneath.
