The idea

What is Qawwali and Sufi music?

Qawwali and Sufi music are the devotional music traditions of South Asian Islam. Qawwali, traced to Amir Khusrau at the Chishti shrine of Nizamuddin Auliya in thirteenth-century Delhi, is sung by a lead qawwal with a chorus, harmonium, dholak and handclaps, building to ecstatic repetition of a single phrase. Its texts praise God, the Prophet and the Sufi saints in the language of love and wine. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and the Sabri Brothers took it to world audiences.

Where it appears: CBSE Hindustani Music Classes 11 and 12, UPSC Art and Culture, university music and ethnomusicology courses, world music modules.

Where learners get stuck

Why Qawwali and Sufi music is hard

Listeners hear repetition and miss its purpose, to carry the audience toward hal, a state of spiritual rapture. Separating qawwali from film imitations, and reading the love poetry as devotion, needs some grounding in Sufi thought.

The picture a good explanation starts with: A qawwali party seated as on a shrine floor, lead singer, second singers, harmoniums, dholak and clappers labelled, with an energy curve over the song's form from alap through to the repeated climax phrase.
