SN1 and SN2 reactions, Taught not just answered.
A real-time, 1:1 lesson on SN1 and SN2 reactions: an AI teacher explains it out loud while it visualizes every step. Interrupt it, ask why, and it checks you got it, in 26 languages.
The idea
What is SN1 and SN2 reactions?
SN1 and SN2 reactions are the two mechanisms by which a nucleophile replaces a leaving group on a saturated carbon. In SN2 the nucleophile attacks from the side opposite the leaving group in a single concerted step, so the rate depends on both reactants and the stereochemistry is inverted like an umbrella flipping. In SN1 the leaving group leaves first, forming a planar carbocation attacked from either face, so the rate depends only on the substrate and the product is racemic.
Where it appears: Class 12 CBSE, A-level, IB Chemistry HL, JEE and NEET, first-year university organic chemistry.
Where learners get stuck
Why SN1 and SN2 reactions is hard
Learners memorise the names without the mechanisms, so they cannot predict which pathway a given substrate, solvent and nucleophile will take, or explain why SN2 inverts configuration.
The picture a good explanation starts with: Two mechanism arrows side by side: a nucleophile attacking backside while the leaving group departs in one step, and a carbocation forming first then being attacked from either face.
A lesson, step by step
How a lesson on SN1 and SN2 reactions goes
01
Ask
Type or say "Why does SN2 give an inverted product?" in your own words, in any of 26 languages.
02
Plan
The tutor plans a storyboard, one picture per idea, starting with two mechanism arrows side by side: a nucleophile attacking backside while the leaving group departs in one step, and a carbocation forming first then being attacked from either face.
03
Explain
It explains SN1 and SN2 reactions out loud while the picture builds step by step, pitched to your level (Class 12 CBSE and up).
04
Interrupt
Say "wait, why?" or type a doubt: it stops, answers over the picture, and carries on. Ask for a different explanation any time.
05
Check
A checkpoint question makes sure the idea landed, and Test Lab keeps the practice going.
06
Your notes
Upload a PDF or a photo of your class notes or a past paper and the lesson follows your textbook's terms.
Ask it anything
Questions learners ask about SN1 and SN2 reactions
- Why does SN2 give an inverted product?
- How do I decide whether a reaction goes SN1 or SN2?
- Why do tertiary halides prefer the SN1 mechanism?
Any of these, or your own, typed or spoken. The tutor answers on the picture and adapts to how well you are following.
Questions
Asked, Answered
Can LetMeTeach explain SN1 and SN2 reactions?
Yes. Ask in your own words and the tutor plans a lesson on SN1 and SN2 reactions: it starts with two mechanism arrows side by side: a nucleophile attacking backside while the leaving group departs in one step, and a carbocation forming first then being attacked from either face. Then it explains each step out loud as the picture builds, stops when you say "wait, why?", and ends with a checkpoint question.
Where does SN1 and SN2 reactions come up?
Class 12 CBSE, A-level, IB Chemistry HL, JEE and NEET, first-year university organic chemistry. The lesson is pitched to your level and the exam or curriculum you follow, and you can upload your own notes or past papers so it uses your textbook's terms.
Can I learn SN1 and SN2 reactions in my own language?
Yes. LetMeTeach teaches in 26 languages and plans the lesson in the language you choose rather than translating an English one, so the terms match what your textbook says. The Free plan includes 7 hours a month with no card.
