The idea

What is Tamil Sangam poetry?

Tamil Sangam poetry is the earliest surviving body of Tamil literature, composed roughly between the third century BCE and the third century CE and gathered in anthologies such as the Ettuthogai and Pathuppattu. The poems fall into two kinds: akam, the inner world of love, and puram, the outer world of war, kingship and ethics. Akam poems use five landscapes (tinai), each with its own flower, season and mood, so that a place name quietly tells you what the lovers feel.

Where it appears: Tamil Nadu State Board Tamil Classes 9 to 12, CBSE Tamil, university Tamil literature, UPSC Tamil literature optional.

Where learners get stuck

Why Tamil Sangam poetry is hard

The tinai system means the poems say feelings through landscape rather than directly, which confuses readers who expect plain statements. Old Tamil vocabulary and the akam and puram split take time to get used to.

The picture a good explanation starts with: A map-like chart of the five tinai landscapes, mountain, forest, farmland, seashore and wasteland, each labelled with its flower, time of day and the stage of love it stands for.
