The idea
What is The Renaissance masters?
The Renaissance masters are the artists of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Italy whose work revived classical ideals and transformed Western art: Leonardo da Vinci (the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper), Michelangelo (the David, the Sistine Chapel ceiling), Raphael (The School of Athens), and before them Masaccio, Donatello and Botticelli, with Titian in Venice. They developed linear perspective, anatomy from dissection, oil glazing and sfumato, and treated the human body and the natural world as subjects worthy of exact study.

Where learners get stuck
Why The Renaissance masters is hard
Students mix up the artists and their works, and cannot explain what changed from medieval art without seeing the two side by side: flat gold backgrounds against measured space, stiff figures against studied anatomy.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A timeline from Masaccio to Titian with a thumbnail of one key work per artist, and beneath it a medieval altarpiece next to a Raphael to show the arrival of perspective and naturalism.
