The idea
What is Banking and money creation?
Banking and money creation explain how commercial banks turn deposits into loans and so expand the money supply. When a bank receives a deposit it keeps a fraction as reserves and lends the rest; the borrower spends it, the recipient deposits it in another bank, which lends again, so one deposit supports a multiple of itself in new money. The money multiplier is the inverse of the reserve ratio, and the central bank steers the process through reserve requirements and interest rates.

Where learners get stuck
Why Banking and money creation is hard
Learners believe banks only lend out money that savers deposit and that money is created solely by printing notes; the idea that a loan creates a new deposit, and the geometric chain behind the multiplier, feel like a trick.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A chain of three banks with a deposit flowing in, a slice kept as reserves and the rest lent on to the next, with the running total of money created growing at each step.
