The idea

What is Inflation and the CPI?

Inflation and the CPI concern the general rise in prices over time and how it is measured. Inflation means money buys less than before; it can be driven by demand outrunning supply (demand-pull), or by rising costs of wages or inputs (cost-push). The consumer price index tracks the cost of a fixed basket of goods and services a typical household buys, compared with a base year, and the change in that index is the headline inflation figure; India's central bank targets CPI inflation.

Where it appears: Class 12 CBSE Economics, ISC, IGCSE and A Level Economics, IB Economics, UPSC prelims and mains, bank exams.

Where learners get stuck

Why Inflation and the CPI is hard

Learners think falling inflation means falling prices (it means prices rise more slowly), confuse CPI with WPI, and do not see why a fixed basket overstates inflation when people switch to cheaper substitutes.

The picture a good explanation starts with: A shopping basket priced in a base year and again today, with the index computed from the two totals, and a line graph showing the index rising while its rate of change falls.
