The idea
What is GDP and national income?
GDP and national income are the measures of the total value of what an economy produces. Gross domestic product is the market value of all final goods and services produced within a country's borders in a year, counted by the output, income or expenditure method. Gross national product adjusts for income earned abroad by residents and paid to foreigners; subtracting depreciation gives net measures, and national income at factor cost removes indirect taxes and adds subsidies. Real GDP strips out inflation.
Where it appears: Class 12 CBSE Economics (Macroeconomics), ISC, IGCSE and A Level Economics, IB Economics, UPSC prelims, RBI and bank exams.
Where learners get stuck
Why GDP and national income is hard
Learners double-count intermediate goods, cannot keep the chain from GDP to NNP at factor cost straight, and confuse nominal with real growth, so a year of high inflation looks like a year of high output.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A circular flow of income between households and firms with the three measurement points marked, beside a stepped ladder from GDP at market price down to national income.
