The idea
What is Climate zones of the world?
Climate zones of the world are the broad belts into which the earth's surface is divided by temperature and rainfall patterns. Near the equator lies the hot, wet equatorial zone; on either side are tropical savanna and then the hot deserts around the tropics; the temperate zones have distinct seasons and include Mediterranean, maritime and continental types; and the polar zones are cold all year. The Koppen scheme classifies these using letters, and altitude, ocean currents and distance from the sea modify them.
Where it appears: Class 7 and 11 NCERT Geography, CBSE and ICSE, IGCSE and IB Geography, UPSC prelims.
Where learners get stuck
Why Climate zones of the world is hard
Learners assume climate depends only on distance from the equator, which cannot explain why deserts sit at the tropics, why coasts are milder than interiors, or what the Koppen letters stand for.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A world map with the main climate belts coloured from equator to poles, and a side graph of temperature and rainfall for one city from each zone.
