The idea

What is Monsoons in India?

Monsoons in India are the seasonal reversal of winds that brings most of the subcontinent's rainfall. In summer the land heats faster than the Indian Ocean, creating low pressure over north-west India that draws in moist south-westerly winds; these split into the Arabian Sea branch, which hits the Western Ghats, and the Bay of Bengal branch, which travels up the Ganga plain. From October the land cools, the winds reverse to blow from the north-east, and the retreating monsoon brings rain to Tamil Nadu.

Where it appears: Class 9 NCERT Geography (Climate), CBSE and ICSE, state boards, UPSC prelims and mains, state PSC exams.

Where learners get stuck

Why Monsoons in India is hard

Learners think the monsoon is simply the rainy season and cannot explain the pressure difference, why the Western Ghats are wet while the Deccan behind them is dry, or why Tamil Nadu gets its rain in winter.

The picture a good explanation starts with: A map of India in June with the low-pressure cell over Rajasthan and two curved wind arrows from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, with rain shadows shaded.
