The idea

What is Madhubani and Warli art?

Madhubani and Warli art are two Indian folk painting traditions. Madhubani (or Mithila) painting from Bihar fills the whole surface with bright natural colours, double-line borders and dense patterns of fish, peacocks, lotuses, the sun, and scenes from the Ramayana and Krishna's life, originally painted by women on house walls for weddings and festivals. Warli painting, from the Warli tribe of Maharashtra, uses only white rice paste on a mud-brown ground, building people, animals and the circling tarpa dance from triangles, circles and lines.

Where it appears: CBSE Art Education Classes 6 to 10, CBSE Class 12 Fine Arts, UPSC Art and Culture, NCERT textbooks.

Where learners get stuck

Why Madhubani and Warli art is hard

Students confuse the two or lump them together as 'tribal art'. Madhubani's sub-styles (bharni, kachni, godna) and Warli's strict geometric grammar are easy to mimic badly and hard to describe precisely.

The picture a good explanation starts with: A split page: left, a Madhubani fish with double outline, filled patterns and a bordered frame; right, Warli figures built from two triangles meeting at the waist, arranged in a spiral dance.
