The idea
What is The Gupta golden age?
The Gupta golden age is the name given to the period of the Gupta Empire, roughly 320 to 550 CE, when northern India under rulers such as Chandragupta I, Samudragupta and Chandragupta II enjoyed political stability and a flowering of science, art and literature. Aryabhata calculated pi and proposed that the earth rotates, the decimal place-value system with zero spread, Kalidasa wrote Shakuntala, and the Ajanta paintings and the Sarnath Buddha set classical standards. Hun invasions and weak successors ended the empire.
Where it appears: Class 6 and 12 NCERT, CBSE and ICSE, state boards, UPSC prelims and mains, state PSC exams.
Where learners get stuck
Why The Gupta golden age is hard
Learners confuse Chandragupta I and II with Chandragupta Maurya, overstate the golden age label without noting the growth of caste rigidity and the decline in women's status, and misattribute discoveries like zero to a single person.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A map of the Gupta Empire with its capital Pataliputra, surrounded by panels for Aryabhata's astronomy, Kalidasa's plays, Ajanta art and the decimal system.
