The idea
What is The Indus Valley Civilisation?
The Indus Valley Civilisation was a Bronze Age urban culture that flourished from about 2600 to 1900 BCE across present-day Pakistan and north-west India, with major cities at Harappa, Mohenjo-daro, Dholavira and Lothal. Its cities were laid out on grids with baked-brick houses, covered drains, large granaries and the Great Bath, and it traded seals, beads and cotton with Mesopotamia. Its script remains undeciphered, and its decline is linked to shifting rivers, climate change and trade disruption rather than a single invasion.
Where it appears: Class 6 and 12 NCERT, CBSE and ICSE, state boards, UPSC prelims, IGCSE and IB ancient history.
Where learners get stuck
Why The Indus Valley Civilisation is hard
Learners assume an Aryan invasion destroyed it, a view the evidence does not support, and mix up which find belongs to which site, such as the Great Bath at Mohenjo-daro or the dockyard at Lothal.
The picture a good explanation starts with: A map of the Indus and Ghaggar-Hakra river systems with the main sites dotted, and a zoomed layout of Mohenjo-daro showing the citadel, grid streets and drains.
